Did McCarthy “beat the table” for Dak?

FRISCO – National TV host Colin Cowherd on FS1 recently opened up about the Dallas Cowboys’ failure to strike a long-term deal with Dak Prescott when questioning whether coach Mike McCarthy has worked behind the scenes to campaign for the quarterback.

“Did McCarthy ‘beat the table’ for Dak?” Cowherd asked.

My response to the question as a guest on “The Herd” was and still is a qualified “yes”. Yes, McCarthy has power inside The Star, just like Jason Garrett before him. Yes, McCarthy supports Prescott.

But specifically “beating the table”? I don’t believe McCarthy got into any contracts … nor should he, a lesson learned long ago by Jimmy Johnson, who did so in his first season here, 1989, before realizing the contradictory difficulties in saying one day to a player from behind a desk: “You are not good enough for this salary”, then the next day saying to him behind a whistle: “You can conquer the world!”.

But I believe Dak Prescott’s future as “America’s Team” quarterback is one of the reasons McCarthy actually signed here.

During his tenure at Green Bay, McCarthy was not compelled to get involved in personnel decisions – much to his regret. In Dallas, he was pleasantly surprised by the Jones’ “us” philosophy, a concept that places him alongside Jerry, Stephen and Chief of Staff Will McClay. … in staff.

As a staff, McCarthy thinks Dak is a “QB franchise” who can take a team to a Super Bowl. This is his “table-book”. And now comes the next hurdle, a lot more in McCarthy’s ‘lane’ than dollars and sense, and which comes with some irony: Help coach Dak Prescott be such a good QB as the Cowboys in Spring 2021. will again be challenged to sign it.
