The Swiss federal prosecutor Michael Lauber, who is controversial because of his investigative methods in the FIFA complex, has offered to resign. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office said that he had decided “in the interests of the institutions” to take this step. Among other things, the supervisory authority accused the top Swiss prosecutor of violating his official duties and telling the untruth. Lauber had contested the allegations for months and lodged an appeal with the Federal Administrative Court.
Also in the summer fairy tale trial against former German football officials because of dubious payments in connection with the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Lauber had not cut a good figure. His agency delayed the investigation until there was no longer time to go to trial and the charges expired a few weeks ago. The defendants wanted to refute all allegations in the proceedings and opted for an acquittal.
