Canadian Mackenzie Hughes will return to the US Open after another strong exit from the PGA Tour.

Hughes of Dundas, Ontario, tied on sixth Sunday at Memorial to earn a spot in the main tournament.

He will join fellow Canadian Corey Conners from Listowel, Ontario, and Adam Hadwin from Abbotsford, BC, at Winged Foot when the US Open starts to drop in the fall.

Hughes, who also qualified for the US Open in 2013 and ’18, had three little birds – one at number 12 with 67-foot putts – and three trolleys for a 72 in the last round of the Memorial to finish 3 under.

Hughes and runner-up Ryan Palmer earned the US Open as the top two players in the top 10 who were not already eligible.

Henrik Norlander could have taken the final place with an equal 18, but he went crazy to tie Hughes to 3 below. The place went to Hughes because it had the best world ranking.

Jon Rahm fought for a 3-over 75 but stuck to win the tournament with three shots on Palmer at 9 below.

Rahm, who had an eight-shot lead on the turn before a difficult back-nine, joins Seve Ballesteros as the only Spaniards to reach No. 1 in the world championship of golf after the victory – jumping Rory McIlroy, who has maintained the first position since February. 9.

Meanwhile, Conners (72) came in on a tie for 22 to 3 and Hadwin (81) dropped to 54th at 9.

Hughes will pass from n. 97 to the best number 75 of his career in the world championship of golf after the Memorial.

He shot 60 in the first round of the traveler championship less than a month ago and ended the tournament third, while he also took second place in the Honda Classic in March before the COVID-19 pandemic stopped golf.

29-year-old Hughes reached the top 10 in the top 10 in 11 events in 2020, after only three in the top 10 in 54 tournaments between 2018 and ’19.

There were only five players left on Sunday, the lowest number for a final round since the start of the Memorial in 1976. The average score of 75,932 has been the highest for the final round since it was 75,972 in 1978.

The 120th US Open, originally scheduled for June 18-21, was postponed to September 17-20 due to the pandemic.
