Hertha BSC continues to think big. After investor Lars Windhorst joined, the Berliners no longer want to be mediocre. The companies that act as new main sponsors also fit in with this.
Jürgen Klinsmann immediately painted the big picture. The former national coach saw Hertha BSC as the most exciting football project in Europe and wanted to turn the rather squeaky capital club into a “big city club”.
The Klinsmann era ended after only 76 days. It was a dirty breakup that the 55-year-old made last February. His vision of no longer wanting to be mediocre at Hertha has remained.
It should be glamorous for the Berliners. After the entry of investor Lars Windhorst, who through his company Tennor will have invested a total of 347 million euros in the club by October, this is not just a dream come true.
The money should form the basis for a successful sporting future. It should not be the only financial injection for Hertha this summer. According to information from the “Berliner Zeitung”, the club is courting a commitment from the global corporations Tesla and Amazon. The contract with Hertha’s main sponsor Tedi will run until the end of the coming season, but that doesn’t stop Berliners from looking for a more prominent donor. The discounter Tedi is said to be ready to exit the current contract, which brings Hertha an estimated 7.5 million a year.
20 million a season from Tesla?
A deal with the car manufacturer Tesla, which is building a gigantic factory in the Brandenburg town of Grünheide near Berlin, or the online mail order company Amazon could bring Hertha up to EUR 20 million a year. In Klinsmann’s short term of office, contacts with the US corporations are said to have been made at the beginning of the year.
The investor’s money has already been reflected in Hertha’s activities in the transfer market. In recent months, the Berliners have signed Lucas Tousart from Olympique Lyon (25 million), Matheus Cunha from Leipzig (18) and Krzysztof Piatek from AC Milan (24).
They will all start training again under Bruno Labbadia on July 27th. Unlike in previous years, the team will completely do without training camps in preparation. The Bundesliga season starts on September 18, a week before the DFB Cup already has its first competitive matches.
