But, even excluding the championship restart scheduled for Thursday night, the Bulls will have a couple of names to keep track of when official votes are announced in August. Coby White’s first year of lightning pushed him into the thick mix of All-Rookie; and the campaign to relaunch Kris Dunn’s career should also justify the consideration of the All-Defensive team.

But the emergence of Dunn as a prominent perimeter defender and White’s flashes of brilliance marked silver coatings in a largely daunting year for Bulls fans. Recognition for their exploits would be a good story to limit the campaign. So what are their chances? Let’s go through.
Coby White
This leaves a smörgåsbord of names for four slots (in no particular order): Rui Hachimura, RJ Barrett, Terence Davis, Tyler Herro, Matisse Thybulle and Coby. Michael Porter Jr. is eligible, but hasn’t played enough. Kevin Porter Jr. and Jarrett Culver had their moments, but they probably don’t top the top 10. Jaxson Hayes is an options center, I guess.
Davis is a sexy choice in a great team (Raptors) with amazing advanced numbers (he also set the Bulls on fire on Super Bowl Sunday, if you remember). He probably feels unable to get a job. Hachimura’s averages of 13.4 points and 6.1 rebound with the goal goal of 47.8% and the two-way ability separate him. Herro played 27.2 minutes a night, fired 39.1% from 3 and made great shots for a good Heat team. He Deserves.
And between Thybulle, Barrett and Coby, White seems the right choice. Thybulle’s defensive ability is undeniable (coming soon to an All-Defensive team), and he fired better than expected, but his skills are more subtle than the usually rewarded All-Rookie teams. Barrett and White’s counting statistics and shot rates throughout the season are comparable, but Barrett simply didn’t have a stretch like White’s post-All-Star jerk, when he averaged 33.7 minutes, 24 , 7 points and 4.3 assists per game on the use of the elite and 46.8-40.7-89.5 The shooting is divided into 10 games. Nor did Barrett perform as distinctive as White’s 3-pronged fourth quarter against the Knicks in November, or 33, 33 and 35 point-to-back explosions back in February. In a nutshell, the maximum production limit was higher for White. Barrett played a few minutes longer, but White appeared in 10 more games.
Kris Dunn

The eye test confirms all of the above. Dunn was a terror that swept the ball, smashed the screen and darted all season long. He anchored a group that forced the turnovers to a mentally bending rate and got much of their crime by running away from these turnovers. He engulfed premier threats from Trae Young to Paul George at various points. He gave the Bulls an identity.
Another would apparently be Dunn’s poor playing time. Even in a truncated season, his 52 games, 1,276 minutes and 24.9 minutes per game on average seem paltry. Injury and offensive deficiencies played a role there.
But extrapolate those numbers into an 82-game campaign and shake up for around 66 games and 1,625 minutes, assuming the average is 24.9 minutes. All-Defense nods based on these criteria is not without precedent. Excluding the shortened block seasons of 1998-99 and 2011-12, 12 players forged All-Defensive seasons with less than 1,700 minutes played. Three: Andrei Kirilenko in 2004-05 (41 G, 1,349 min, 32.9 per game for a Jazz team with 26 wins); Avery Bradley in 2012-13 (50 G, 1,435 min, 28.7 per game); and Tony Allen in 2010-11 (72 G, 1,494 min, 20.8 per game) – they did it with less than 1,500. It’s worth noting: this happened recently in 2016 (again Tony Allen), so recent history isn’t necessarily on Dunn’s side.
Yes, Dunn’s year was already over due to a distortion of the MCL when the league closed on March 11th. The extrapolation referred to above would be unfair if the season had ended uninterrupted or if the league had counted the sowing matches in Orlando for the vote of the prizes. But they are not. Voting was scheduled for Tuesday and only the pre-hiatus game counts.
Ultimately, Dunn’s hopes probably lie in winning a second team spot. There are other deserving candidates. Looking at the public ballot boxes, it appears that Ben Simmons and Marcus Smart are deadly locks to claim two of the four guard points. Eric Bledsoe was a wrecking ball on a historically large defense. Kyle Lowry, Chris Paul and Patrick Beverley have the pedigree and influence the victory at a high level. Kawhi Leonard is apparently fit for guard.
Did Dunn have the best season as individual group defender? Maybe you could present a case. But often that’s not what these premiums come down to.
