The US Open has a Rona problem and a drone – a problem – which means there are concerns about unmanned planes infiltrating the tennis tournament … and the NYPD is on the case.
With the US Open coming to New York on August 31, the organizers have already said that no fans will be allowed to attend the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sources say TMZ Sports … law enforcement agencies are now predicting an increase in drone activity around Flushing Meadows by journalists and fans seeking to get a glimpse of the action.
We are told … there are concerns about the safety of athletes and also the possibility that drones create distractions during tournaments that could affect the event.
The NYPD tells us that “they will have a counter-drone team” during the event to keep an eye on anyone who violates drone laws.
“Drones are illegal in New York City and anyone who uses one must basically have a driver’s license and a flight plan,” a NYPD spokesman told TMZ Sports.
So how are the cops going to catch drone violators? We are told that the NYPD will use sensors that can detect signals from the drones and portable devices that control them.
If caught, illegal drone operators could face severe penalties, especially if an out of control drone hits a person.
In conclusion: just watch the action on TV.
