Würzburg had been in 16th place on the 17th matchday and has climbed continuously in the table since then. Especially after the Corona break, the team coached by Michael Schiele asserted themselves in the long-standing promotion race and scored 23 points from eleven games.
FC Ingolstadt won their game at 1860 Munich 2-0 (0-0) by goals from former Bundesliga professional Maximilian Beister (50th minute) and Dennis Eckert (82nd), but must be satisfied with the relegation rank. Ingolstadt meets 1. FC Nürnberg in the promotion games.
During the week Eintracht Braunschweig had already secured one of the two direct promotion places. The champions will remain in the league in the coming season as the second team of FC Bayern may not advance to the 2nd Bundesliga. For example, the fifth place in the table is enough for MSV Duisburg, who celebrated a 4: 0 (1: 0) victory against Unterhaching, to secure one of the four starting places for the DFB Cup in the coming season.
Chemnitz struggles, Zwickau holds the class
Chemnitz FC just missed the rescue from relegation. The team won their home game against Hansa Rostock 4: 2 (0: 0), but with the same points they still have a poorer goal difference than FSV Zwickau, for whom a goalless draw against Waldhof Mannheim is enough to stay in the league.
The three other relegated players Preussen Münster, SG Sonnenhof Großaspach and Carl Zeiss Jena were already certain before the final matchday.
