31 teams, 31 book recommendations – The Athletic

It’s The Athletic Sports Book Week – not the type of betting, but a celebration of the written word and the joy that comes from rolling up with a meaty read. (Or maybe while you’re sitting on a cold ice rink.)

To start with, we suggested a task to our NHL beatwriters: give a book recommendation about the team you cover. We repeated this project with our NBA, NFL, MLB, college football, college basketball and basketball writers for women.

On the NHL side, the picks led to a gold standard (“The Game” by Ken Dryden), some compilations (“100 things” that a team’s fans had to know were popular), but also to an unusual selection, the ice hockey fans may wish to add to their reading lists. Books written by The Athletic staff are marked with an asterisk

.

And of course we couldn’t publish this without asking about some kind of book discussion. What are your favorite books in the NHL? What do you…
