2014 World Cup Winner Andre Schuerrle Retires at 29

Still remember Andre Schuerrle? The winner of the 2014 World Cup with Germany and the former Chelsea player decided to hang up his shoes at a young age, 29 years.

Earlier this week, Schuerrle was released from Borussia Dortmund just a year earlier than the end of his contract. He only made 33 appearances in the Bundesliga for two seasons before being loaned out to Fulham and Spartak Moscow.

On Friday (7/17/2020), Schuerrle announced his retirement through his Instagram account @andreschuerrle. Schuerrle’s decision to retire was no longer motivated to play football, which was revealed in a recent interview with Der Spiegel.

“I want you to know that I no longer play professional football !!” Schuerrle wrote Omnisport. “On behalf of myself and my family I want to thank all those who are part of these phenomenal years!”

“The support and love you share with me is truly extraordinary and more than I ever asked for! Now I am ready and open all the wonderful possibilities that may come to me.”

Throughout his career, Schuerrle has made more than 350 appearances in all competitions for Mainz, Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea, Wolfsburg, Dortmund, Fulham and Spartak. He has scored 86 goals. While at the international level, Schuerrle has collected 57 caps for the German national team with a contribution of 22 goals.

Schuerrle is known for his contribution in the 2014 World Cup final. Schuerrle created a cross that struck Mario Goetze into the Argentine goal to ensure Germany won 1-0 in extra time.
