Yahoo Sports unveils fantasy baseball plans for a shortened MLB season

Yahoo Sports released its plans on Sunday to adjust various league formats for its popular fantasy baseball platform for the shortened 60-game major league baseball season in 2020, which is set to begin on July 23.

This includes changes to head-to-head, rotisserie and scoring leagues so players get as close as possible to a normal 2020 season.

“Our plans for Yahoo Fantasy Baseball are based on the resumption of the game and the shortened season,” said Brian Marshall, vice president of product at Yahoo Sports. “The updates we’ve introduced will ensure the continuation of the best fantasy user experience.”

Here are the biggest changes Yahoo is making for this unique and unprecedented situation.

  • Head-to-head leagues will be nine weeks long. There will be seven regular season weeks and two playoff weeks. This means that only four teams can complete the post-season in H2H leagues without bye-bye weeks.
  • For roto and point leagues, the teams have a maximum of 525 innings and the position players a maximum of 60 games. That’s a proportional change for the season, Yahoo said.
  • For all leagues, the injured list slots will be expanded from two to four to take into account the coronavirus pandemic. Private leagues can adjust this change here.
  • The standard trading period for all leagues is September 6th.
  • According to Yahoo, there will be no changes in position eligibility for players.
  • If a game leads to additional innings and MLB applies the rule of a runner from the 2nd base, the pitcher will do so Not will be charged with a deserved run if this runner scores. In addition, “all games that start and are postponed are considered blocked and statistics count”.
  • If you play in a Yahoo Fantasy Baseball Pro League, pay special attention here. If your Pro League was created for 60 games before the new schedule was announced, your design will be canceled and you will have to start over. Pro Yahoo will reimburse your league entry fee to your Yahoo Fantasy Wallet and players can rejoin a Pro League draft.
  • If your league has a cash league competition, commissioners can also cancel and redraw their competition if they wish. The Commissioners should follow the steps outlined here.

Yahoo should release these details soon, but these are the first steps in what is probably one of the most unpredictable and fluid MLB seasons we’ve ever seen.
