“Unfair” – the championship complaint that will delight Coventry City fans

English Football League chairman Rick Parry has called for Prime League parachute payments to be dropped and top-tier money to be shared between all of the division’s clubs.

Coventry City will have a limited budget for the championship next season. Mark Robins and his team are trying to consolidate their place in the division the first time.

It is teams like the Sky Blues who are jealous of the parachute payments distributed to other sides of the division.

Teams that have relegated from the Premier League are currently being supported by huge payments from increased TV revenues to help them fall behind.

Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City and Fulham all received payments after leaving the top division last season, while West Brom, Stoke City and Swansea City are also eligible after their previous relegation.

Championship clubs also receive around £ 100m solidarity payments from the Premier League, although parachute payments offer clubs a lot more.

And EFL chairman Parry is keen to see these payments fall, and wants the Premier League money to be distributed more than wasted on some clubs.

“Parachute payments are fissile,” Parry said in an interview with The Times.

“We have six clubs in the championship that receive about £ 226 million in parachute payments (this season) and the other 18 clubs that get £ 81 million between them.

“It is not a just separation. It promotes irrational behavior by clubs that do not receive parachute payments. I definitely think they should go.

“Parachute payment fixes the symptom, but not the problem. Why are they helping clubs that are leaving the Premier League?

“You help them because there is a gap. Why don’t we address the abyss? Then we would not need the parachute payments.

“If you check it up a few years ago, Leeds United got around £ 4m in television money and Huddersfield, who was in the Premier League, if only briefly, £ 100m. How can that be right?

“We have to get rid of the cliffs for the benefit of the clubs in the Premier League and in the championship. We have to narrow the gap between the two. “
