Play it near the vest – Windie’s test team with the Black Lives Matter logo

The West Indies is the newest team to carry the Black Lives Matter campaign logo, skipper Jason Holder and Co., and have it attached to the collar of the outfits to be worn during the # VaisetheBat test series from July 8th .

The West Indies are in England to compete for the Wisden Trophy they won in the Caribbean last year.

The logo, designed by Alisha Hosannah, partner of Watford Football Club captain Troy Deeney, shows a clenched fist and the words Black Lives Matter. The word “black” inserted the logo where the “a” should be.

According to reports from England, the CWI turned to Deeney for permission to use the logo in accordance with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations.

“This is a crucial moment in history for sports, for playing cricket and for the West Indies cricket team. We have come to England to keep the Wisden Trophy, but we are very aware of events around the world and the struggle for justice and equality. We believe that we have a duty to show solidarity and raise awareness, “said Holder.

Holder said the decision to wear the Black Lives logo was not taken lightly and the West Indies understand very well the position they are taking in the fight for equality.

Pull Quote: As a group of young men, we know the rich and diverse history of cricket in the West Indies and we know that we are guardians of the great game for future generations.

“We didn’t make our decision lightly. We know what it is like to make judgments based on the color of our skin, so we know what it feels like, this goes beyond borders.

There has to be equality and there has to be unity. Until we understand it as human beings, we cannot stop. We have to find a way to have equal rights, and people cannot be seen differently because of their skin color or ethnic background. “

Deeney said he and his partner are delighted to be part of the statement the West Indies made in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign.

“Alisha and I are very proud to be asked and to take part in a monumental moment in world sports. This amazing decision by the West Indies cricket team to demonstrate their support for Black Lives Matter. When I got the call, I didn’t hesitate to answer because, as an athlete, I know the importance of our efforts to bring about change and the role we play in making changes in our society, “said Deeney.

Deeney said when he grew up the West Indies were part of what shaped his childhood.

“Seeing cricket with my grandpa and seeing Brian Lara become a global superstar from a cricketer has shaped my childhood. So it’s great to help West Indies Cricket show their support in such a meaningful way.”

West Indies are playing behind closed doors in three friendly matches against England – the first at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton and the other two at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, where they are currently based.

Due to COVID19, they have trained as part of the comprehensive medical and operational plans to ensure the safety of players and staff and live in a “bio-safe” environment.
