The Dutchman said, there is a more effective way to support the preparation of the Indonesian National Team U-20 ahead of the 2021 U-20 World Cup. One of them is doing maximum training concentration.
“I think we are facing a similar situation. We know the World Cup will be played in May-June next year in Indonesia and be an advantage for players to conduct training camps as much as possible. Play the game against other national team opponents,” Robert said Sunday (28) / 6/2020).
Robert also considered, bringing the U-20 national team for training camp abroad is an effective step so that the team becomes stronger and ready. This was also done by Robert when he became the director of engineering for the Malaysian national team when he wanted to prepare for the world championship.
“This is my experience when I became Director of Technical Malaysia when taking the Malaysian national team abroad so we can measure the strength of the team,” Robert said.
65-year-old coach also does not recommend the national team to compete against the club during the trial period as well. It is intended to see the standard and strength of the team at the same level.
“We also never competed against clubs. We competed against other national teams so we could compare the team standards we needed,” he said.
Throughout his coaching career, Robert also briefly led a number of national teams in the Asian region. One of them is the Malaysian national team and South Korea. Because of that he understood enough to see the needs of young players to be able to mentas at the World Cup.
“Forcing players to play in the league is not a good solution and instead stopping the development of players because they can even lose confidence. So I think the number of training camps by playing lots of international trials is more recommended in my opinion,” he said.
