“Klopp eliminated Man United from their perch!” – Liverpool “five years ahead” of the arch rivals, says Hamann

A former Reds favorite thinks Anfield is now a more attractive prospect for the better players than Old Trafford

Jurgen Klopp eliminated Manchester United “from their position”, according to Dietmar Hamann, who claims that Liverpool are “five years ahead” of their rivals in terms of status on the elite stage.

Liverpool won the sixth European Cup last season after beating Tottenham in an all-English final, which marked the first major trophy in Klopp’s reign.

The triumphs of the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup followed in the first half of the 2019-20 campaign, and the Reds silverware range was completed when they clinched a first league title in 30 years last week.

Klopp’s men were declared champions with a record seven games left to lose thanks to Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.

Liverpool’s first Premier League crown has placed 12 behind United in recent English football history, but in reality it is now only a distance from the Red Devils draw of 20 national triumphs overall.

United have not collected the famous trophy since 2013 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently in the midst of reconstruction work at Old Trafford.

Hamann believes there has been a shift in power at the top of English football, with Liverpool now the biggest Premier League draw under Klopp.

Former midfielder Reds said The mirror: “When I was a player, the club everyone wanted to join was Manchester United. Did you know that signing for United guaranteed you the medals of the winners.

“They were the biggest club, the club everyone was talking about inside and outside of England.

“Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, United has suffered on the pitch. And with perfect timing, Jurgen Klopp came in and made Liverpool the club everyone wants to join.

“In that regard, he eliminated United from their perch.

“I’m not sure that Liverpool will dominate the Premier League as United did – because Manchester City and Pep Guardiola will have something to say about it.

“But Liverpool are five years ahead of United – and the big clubs in London are even further behind.

“Klopp still has four years for his contract – and by the time he wants to surpass 20 United titles and also win the Champions League.”
