Iraqi football legend Ahmed Radhi killed by coronavirus

Iraqi football is in mourning. Sunday, June 21, the Ministry of Health announced the death of Ahmed Radhi, at the age of 56 years. The former footballer was swept away by the coronavirus a few hours before he was flown to Jordan. Ahmed Radhi was infected and hospitalized in Baghdad a week ago. He had left the hospital on Thursday June 18 but was readmitted the same day, victim of a relapse. Second top scorer in the Iraqi selection with 62 goals, the striker was part of the team which disputed the first round the 1986 World Cup, the first – and always unique – participation of Iraq in this competition. Ahmed Radhi is also the only Iraqi to have scored a goal in the World Cup on June 8, 1986 against Belgium (1-2 defeat). In the 2000s, he embarked on a political career. Adnan Dirjal, former international footballer and current Iraqi Minister of Sports, paid tribute to him: “It is with great sadness that we mourn our companion for a lifetime, the legend of our fans, the unequaled athlete and son of the ‘Iraq, Ahmed Radhi. ”
