‘He will surely score soon’ – Manchester United manager Solskjaer will join Rashford in goal

England have yet to register a post-lockdown goal but their boss insists he is well on his way to his best ever season at Old Trafford

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expects Marcus Rashford to return soon to Manchester United’s goals.

English striker Rashford has 22 goals per club and nation this season, although he has yet to find the net since the top kick has resumed his coronavirus hiatus.

United’s return to the Premier League at Tottenham was Rashford’s first appearance since he suffered a double back stress fracture.

Although the 22-year-old provided a couple of assists for Anthony Martial in last week’s 3-0 victory against Sheffield United, he also dismissed a couple of glorious chances to get on the scoresheet.

After that meeting, Solskjaer urged his team to become more clinical as a collective, but has no worries for Rashford individually.

“Obviously Marcus has been out for a while, but I think he looked strong, he came and he looked strong against Norwich,” said the United boss before Tuesday’s trip to Brighton and Hove Albion.

“He lost one or two chances against Sheffield United, but the goals he has created is what we are focusing on and he is well on his way to his best season ever. I can’t wait for more minutes and he will certainly mark a goal soon. “

Rashford appeared as a substitute after the hour when Norwich City took United to extra time in Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-finals on Carrow Road, with captain Harry Maguire demonstrating an unlikely 118th minute winner.

A semi-final match against Chelsea awaits the England team with United: their undefeated dating back to 14 games in mid-January against Burnley at Old Trafford.

“The players are working very hard and they want to do the best they can and, as a team, we are trying to implement our ideas,” said Solskjaer. “Talk about 14 games, we can talk about the next one – enter the next game knowing you have won the previous game. It’s a good place to be.”

United are firmly on the hunt for a fourth place and the win in Brighton would move them on equal points with Wolves in fifth and two shy of Chelsea in four places, even if he played a game more than Frank Lampard’s Blues.

“I think you’re in the Champions League every year, it’s a great experience, it’s a step forward for the players,” added Solskjaer. “For us that’s what we try to do, win trophies and we have to focus on one game at a time and there are so many teams who want that place.

“We cannot distract ourselves from looking too far and towards others.”
