Formula 1. Grzegorz Gac: How Kubica did not become world champion

Analysis of the list of Formula 1 world champions in recent years shows that the best teams come from German-speaking countries. German (and Austrian) precision and accuracy is legendary, and the procedures leave nothing to chance, even if the factory factories are located in the British Isles. Why isn’t BMW on this list if Robert Kubica was well on his way to the title for the Bavarian brand in 2008? – Interia expert Grzegorz Gac asks.

Entering Formula 1 BMW had a specific plan, assuming the achievement of the next stages step by step. The podium was in the first season, and the second in the constructors’ ranking in the next season. The third season brought the coveted first pole position and victory – both were won by Robert Kubica.

The 2008 season started well for the BMW Sauber team. Nick Heidfeld was second in the inauguration in Australia, and Kubica made another podium finish in Malaysia and Bahrain. Then came the phenomenal second place in the Monaco Grand Prix and finally an unforgettable victory in Montreal.

Before the start of the weekend in Canada, Kubica was asked about an extremely dangerous accident from a year ago. On Sunday afternoon no one asked any more questions. Everyone was full of admiration for the Polish driver. The atmosphere of euphoria, however, was not given to the headquarters of the BMW team, where it was treated as another punt to check the implementation of the plan.

The next stage for BMW was the fight for the world championship, but in the next season. That is why the German brand put a cross on the 2008 season at a key moment when the Polish driver took the lead in the general classification of drivers …

As Kubica admitted many years later, he knew what was going on and immediately at the press conference after the race tried to put pressure on BMW to continue developing the car. The voice of the Pole was not heard.
