Essendon star Zach Merrett in hot water after a late hit leaves Jack Silvagni with a rib injury

Essendon star Zach Merrett will have to wait nervously after an obvious goal against Carlton’s Jack Silvagni made the blues youngster feel worse.

The incident happened early in the first quarter when Merrett tried to chase Silvagni, who poured into striker 50 of the blues.

When Silvagni let go of the kick, Merrett seemed to be connecting his rib area with a swinging left arm.

However, the blues star limped off the ground immediately before the team confirmed that he would not be returning shortly after the incident.

While the incident seemed harmless, the fact that Silvagni was unable to continue the game could result in Merrett being subjected to some scrutiny by the Match Review Officer.

Losing Merrett would be a heavy blow to the bomber midfield, who is already without skipper Dyson Heppell due to an ankle injury.

Merrett, who took the lead in Heppell’s absence, struggled to have a huge impact on the game and ended the heartbreaking 1-point loss of the bombers with only 17 exits.

The result leaves the bombers 2-1 after three games, and in round 5 there is a match against Collingwood on the horizon.
