Liverpool are Premier League champions, and the way they have become England’s kings has prompted many to suggest that they may be the league’s greatest champions.
Given the many great teams from Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City that come to mind when you mention the sizes, we tried to rate the best Premier League seasons ever – except for what national and European cup competitions has been reached, that is.
Liverpool sits here …

10 – MANCHESTER UNITED 93/94
This Manchester United team was the most dominant in the early years of the Premier League when the table contained 22 teams rather than the 20 that exist today. They were a formidable animal and were tirelessly looking for another Premier League title.
Spurred on by enigmatic Eric Cantona and new signing Roy Keane, United were leaders after 40 of his 42 games this season. The back four of Denis Irwin, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister and Paul Parker were rarely separated, and they had people like Lee Sharpe, Andrei Kanchelskis, and a young Ryan Giggs walking up and down.
9 – LEICESTER CITY 15/16
Even if you didn’t know anything about Leicester City or any of the other teams competing in the Premier League this season, a look at the table would show that the Foxes were a dominant team and ended up winning the title by 10 points .
They’ve only lost three times all season and played counterattack football at a time when the world was possessed by the ball.
Jamie Vardy set a new record in consecutive games, Riyad Mahrez was crowned the best player in the league and N’Golo Kante ran for fun.
8 – CHELSEA 16/17
This isn’t a team that comes straight to mind when you think of the best Premier League teams, but looking back on Antonio Conte’s revolutionary season at Chelsea, it was great.
After a bad start to the season, Conte switched to a 3-4-3 formation and suddenly won 12 games in a row and went six games without conceding a goal.
Edge was responsible for the race, Eden Hazard for the trick and creativity, and Diego Costa for the threat of bullying defense across the league to end the blues with an incredible 93 points.
7 – MANCHESTER UNITED 99/00
No, this is not a typo. The 1999/00 Manchester United team was an upgrade to their all-conquering team compared to the previous year in their Premier League-only season.
In this famous triple season, United had to come from behind in the final game of the campaign against Tottenham to take the title by one point. The following year they won by 18 points.
United had probably put together one of the largest teams in the Premier League, with the midfield of David Beckham, Keane, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and the striking quartet of Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. No other side had a chance.
6 – MANCHESTER UNITED 08/09
Like the Manchester United team that we ranked 7th, this team is not as famous as its predecessor from the previous year that is remembered most for winning the Champions League.
In terms of performance in the Premier League, the team won the league again in the last game of the season on August 7, leading the Chelsea table by just two points. However, this was a different animal.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s last season was reinforced by the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov, and the defense, including Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand ahead of Edwin van der Sar, set a new record with 14 consecutive goals. They ended up with 90 points in front of a strong Liverpool team.
5 – MANCHESTER CITY 18/19
Manchester City was only the third club to retain the Premier League title after Manchester United and Chelsea, and they did so after a record point the previous year (more on that later).
They have won their last 14 games in a row and set their own record for the most wins in a Premier League season they had set the year before.
It was particularly noteworthy that for most of the season they got along without their best player, Kevin De Bruyne, and Liverpool was on their heels, just one point behind.
4 – CHELSEA 04/05
Jose Mourinho’s debut in English football was a record in itself when he led Chelsea to the first Premier League title with a tough, defensively trained team.
The blues dominated the league this year and reached a league high of 95 points at the time. The most stunning statistic, however, was that they conceded only 15 goals and scored 25 goals in 38 games.
The first three of Damien Duff, Arjen Robben and Didier Drogba did the rest at the other end of the field as Mourinho’s new 4-3-3 formation broke new ground and signaled the end of 4-4-2.
3 – ARSENAL 03/04
The unconquerables. A truly remarkable feat by the Gunners that remained unbeaten throughout the season, thanks in particular to one of the best attacks the Premier League has ever seen.
Thierry Henry was unstoppable, Dennis Bergkamp steadfast, and the line-up of Freddie Ljungberg and Robert Pires was sometimes incredible.
They are criticized for the number of draws, but they had the best attack and the best defense and no one could hit them.
2 – LIVERPOOL 19/20
For now, consider Liverpool a placeholder, as their current trajectory will overthrow all of Manchester City’s records set two years ago and will become the largest.
The Reds are well on their way to exceed 100 points and haven’t won three times this season, including just one defeat.
Jürgen Klopp has created a relentless winning machine, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to stop soon. The reds are the perfect place to dominate for years.
Should they win against Manchester City (and their one-week hangover) this week, they are at the top of the table with 26 points. And that will be the real test to see if this Liverpool team is really the biggest if they can go on, even if there is nothing left to win.
1 – MANCHESTER CITY 17/18
It takes a few pages to claim a better Premier League season than the Invincibles, but Manchester City’s 100-point performance could be even more impressive than Arsenal’s 0 defeats.
It statistically holds the record for the biggest Premier League season – the most wins, the most goals, the most points, the largest number of points, the largest goal difference … we could go on.
They’ve only lost twice this season – against Manchester United and Liverpool – but it was hunger in the way they went on and chased this 100-point mark, even after wrapping the title that made it so made impressive.
The way in which Gabriel Jesus sealed glorious praise to success in the last minute of the last game stunned the players as if they had won the league again.
