Arsenal tackles the problem of Emile Smith Rowe while Henrikh Mhkitaryan and Roma suffer a rare defeat

Arsenal moved to the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win against Sheffield United on Bramall Lane.

After seeing Nicolas Pepe’s first penalty nullified by David McGoldrick’s late draw, the Blades seemed to have forced extra time, which means that Mikel Arteta would have been prepared for another 30 minutes of biting tension.

But over time, the Gunners, who have hosted Norwich City in their first home game since the Premier League returned last Wednesday earlier this month, have scored a downtime winner through Real Madrid loan Dani Ceballos.

This was enough to seal the Gunners’ move to the last four and start a clash with Manchester City at Wembley next month.

The victory against United was Arsenal’s second in a row after disappointing defeats at the hands of Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion, which means it will have done a lot to increase confidence between the Gunners’ team.

But how did the five Arsenal players get loaned out over the weekend? football.london take a look.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

On Sunday, Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored 69 minutes ahead of Roma, but was powerless to stop the team from falling into a 2-0 defeat against Milan.

Roma were unable to take advantage of the 2-1 win in the restart against Sampdoria last week, as goals from Ante Rebic and Hakan Calhanoglu in the past 15 minutes scored all three points for Milan.

While Sunday’s defeat may have been a severe blow to Roma and Mkhitaryan, the former Manchester United winger has so far enjoyed a successful spell in Italy, scoring six goals and recording three assists in just 15 Serie A appearances.

The Italian giants will be next in action on Thursday evening when they host Udinese.

Jordi Osei-Tutu

VFL Bochum saw their unbeaten 11 games end on Sunday after being beaten 2-0 by Hannover 96.

As the case has shown since football returned to Germany, Arsenal’s youngster Jordi Osei-Tutu has been deployed as a right-back, although it was not enough to prevent a rare defeat from being inflicted on Bochum.

Osei-Tutu played all 90 minutes for Thomas Reis’ team.

In total this season, the 22-year-old has made 22 appearances for Bochum, scoring five goals and claiming three assists.

Konstantinos Mavropanos

After having been absent from the last two teams of the day, Arsenal defender on loan Konstantinos Mavropanos was called up to the squad for the Nuremberg clash with Holstein Kiel on Sunday afternoon.

The Greek defender had lost his last two games after suffering a head injury in the 6-0 win over Wehen Wiesbaden earlier this month.

Although Mavropanos was not called to help his teammates, Nuremberg scored a 1-1 draw, ensuring that they had taken the first step on the road to redemption after the 6-0 draw against Stuttgart last week.

Mohamed Elneny

Egyptian international Mohamed Elneny helps Turkish team Besiktas make two straight wins on Friday night with a routine 3-0 success over Konyaspor.

The midfielder, who joined the Super Lig club with a one-season loan in August, played 84 minutes of the game while goals from Burak Yilmaz, Abdoulay Diaby and Jeremain Lens marked the victory.

Since joining Besiktas, Elneny has made 31 appearances in all competitions, but has failed to find the back of the net.

Emile Smith Rowe

The last borrower of the Gunners to be in action over the weekend was the offensive young midfielder Emile Smith Rowe, who continues to learn his trade with the Huddersfield Town championship outfit.

The young man, who turns 20 at the end of July, joined the Terriers during the transfer window in January, hoping to secure more football in the first team.

Before the end of the English football season due to the coronavirus pandemic, the young man had been in great shape, playing 10 times, scoring once and recording three assists.

After restarting, though, he and Huddersfield’s form declined, with the Terriers losing their first two games, including a 3-1 away defeat in Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Smith Rowe started the 2-0 defeat at home against Wigan Athletic just over a week ago, but was a substitute for the second half against Forest, coming in for the last 30 minutes.

Arsenal will surely hope that it will not suddenly fall out of favor after a promising start to life at John Smith’s Stadium.
