Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Angel Gomes, young and highly regarded, has yet to sign an extension of the contract and looks set to leave Manchester United.

The highly regarded 19-year-old arrived at the United Academy and made his debut at the age of 16 in May 2017, becoming the youngest player since Duncan Edwards appeared for the first team.

However, talks on contracts between Gomes and the club have reached a checkpoint, with Solskjaer now expecting the United midfielder to leave when his contract expires on Tuesday.

Asked if Gomes was leaving the club, Solskjaer replied: “I didn’t hear from you last night or this morning, so it seems that they have been unable to agree on anything.

“The answer is probably short – yes.”

Gomes has appeared twice on the bench in the Premier League this season, while he has started three times in the Europa League.

Bruno Fernandes ‘signature and the emergence of Academic colleague Mason Greenwood have limited the opportunities for Gomes’ first team, and now it looks like he will be leaving the club this summer.

Solskjaer requires attention before “exciting” excitement

The wolves’ victory against Aston Villa on Saturday means that they overtook United in fifth position, although Solskjaer’s team has a game in hand.

They are currently five points adrift of Chelsea in fourth place but, with fifth place currently good enough for qualifying for the Champions League due to Manchester City’s Europe ban, United seem to be in a reasonable position with seven games remaining.

However, Solskjaer acknowledged his competition for a European place and asks that his players focus on one game at a time, starting with their trip to Brighton on Wednesday, living on Sky Sports.

“There are many teams in that battle for the third and fourth. You have Leicester, Chelsea and us, and the Wolves are doing very well.

“I am sure Tottenham, Arsenal and Sheffield United will want to put together a challenge and challenge,” said Solskjaer.

He added: “Every year that you are in the Champions League is a great experience and for the players it is a step forward in playing against the best.

“This is what we strive to do and achieve, as well as winning trophies. To get there, we have to focus on one game at a time because there are many teams right above us and right below us who want that place.

“We don’t want to be distracted by looking too far ahead, we have to go one game at a time.”
