Ezequiel Centurión has signed a contract extension with River Plate running through December 2029, securing his long-term future in Buenos Aires after months of uncertainty regarding his expiring deal.
Contract Extension Secures Goalkeeper’s Future in Buenos Aires
River Plate officials concluded negotiations with 29-year-old goalkeeper Ezequiel Centurión, finalising a multi-year agreement that keeps him at the Estadio Monumental through 2029. The player’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of December, creating a situation where his continuity with the club remained unresolved until mid-week meetings produced a definitive agreement.
Stéfano Di Carlo met with the player to formalize the paperwork, putting an end to speculation surrounding the squad’s depth chart. Centurión was one of two senior players whose contracts were scheduled to run out in December, alongside midfielder Fausto Vera, whose loan from Atlético Mineiro leaves club directors facing a separate decision regarding a permanent purchase option.
Injury Setbacks and the Rise of Santiago Beltrán
The path back to regular involvement in Núñez has presented challenges for Centurión since his return from a successful loan spell at Independiente Rivadavia. Anticipated as the natural successor to veteran starter Franco Armani, the Río Negro native suffered an injury that sidelined him during the opening stages of the domestic campaign.
That absence coincided with the emergence of Santiago Beltrán. Backed by standout performances, Beltrán seized the starting role in the senior squad, limiting Centurión to just three appearances with the reserve team following his recovery. Despite recording zero official minutes with the senior side since returning to the club, Centurión elected to commit his future to the institution.
Future Squad Planning and European Interest
Club management made it clear that securing Centurión on a long-term basis remains a priority regardless of shifting dynamics within the position. Santiago Beltrán has already attracted attention from several European clubs, including Atlético Madrid, leaving open the possibility of a high-profile transfer window departure.
With potential interest looming from abroad regarding Beltrán heading into future transfer windows, River Plate leadership intended to maintain experienced depth on the roster. Securing Centurión provides stability in the position while allowing technical staff to evaluate transfer market options should European suitors formalize their interest in the current starting goalkeeper.
