Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Portugal national team training camp following a public clash with head coach Jorge Jesus over playing time ahead of their UEFA Nations League matches. The 41-year-old announced his departure on his Instagram account after meeting with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation.
The Disputed Playing Time That Sparked the Departure
The friction between Ronaldo and the coaching staff intensified during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in the UEFA Nations League. Jesus opted to start João Félix and Gonçalo Ramos in the attacking line. Although Ronaldo was sent to warm up along the touchline during the fixture, he ultimately did not feature in the match and walked straight down the tunnel to the dressing room.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Portugal’s upcoming fixture against Denmark, Jesus addressed his selection choices and confirmed that Ronaldo would similarly be left out of the starting lineup for the next game. The 72-year-old manager emphasized that his decisions are final and independent of external pressures.
Manager Jorge Jesus Defends His Roster Decisions
Addressing reporters regarding his private discussions with Ronaldo—who missed the team’s final three training sessions on the pitch—Jesus was blunt about his authority within the squad. “I told Cristiano he wouldn’t play in the Norway and Denmark matches. If I need him for 30 minutes, he comes on; if not, he doesn’t. No player can change my decision. Not him or anyone else. Nor any president.”

Jesus added that while players who warm up for extended periods without entering the pitch naturally feel frustrated, individual status does not supersede tactical management. “Whether it’s Cristiano, Maradona, or Pelé, it makes no difference. I have 23 players,” Jesus said.
Ronaldo Promises to Reveal the Truth to the Public
Following the manager’s press conference, Ronaldo held direct talks with the head of the Portuguese Football Federation before packing his bags. In a statement posted to his Instagram account, the veteran confirmed he was exiting the camp and hinted at underlying tensions that he plans to address publicly at a later date.
“Following the national team coach’s press conference and my meeting with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the camp,” Ronaldo wrote. “The truth behind my departure from the national team, to which I have always shown great commitment, will be explained to the Portuguese people when the time is right. Now it is time to wish Portugal and all my teammates success.”
Upcoming Fixtures and Team Outlook
The Portugal squad remains in preparation for their upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.
