Maitane Melero will headline the field at the San Sebastián Rural Kutxa Half Marathon this Sunday, targeting her first victory in the Basque city as part of an extensive autumn racing schedule across Gipuzkoa. The 43-year-old athlete, an engineer and mother from Pamplona, has built an enduring career in distance running that spans multiple Spanish national titles and an international appearance at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin.
San Sebastián Half Marathon Aims and Autumn Schedule
Sunday’s 21.097-kilometer race marks the beginning of an ambitious multi-race autumn campaign for Melero. Following her appearance on the asphalt of Donostia, she plans to compete in the Behobia-San Sebastián and the Zurich Marathon of San Sebastián in November. Melero holds a personal best of 1h12:08 in the half marathon, set in Seville in 2022, which stands as a Navarrese record. Despite her extensive background in elite competition, she views herself as a relative newcomer to longer road events. Organizers confirmed the start time for Sunday’s half marathon at 9:30 a.m. local time (07:30 UTC).
Balancing Engineering, Motherhood, and Elite Training
Melero’s athletic trajectory gained widespread recognition following a 2018 feature by Movistar’s ‘Informe Robinson’, which documented how she balanced her engineering career, family life, and high-level training. Notably, her peak athletic results and international selections largely arrived after the birth of her son, Ilai, in 2016. Now competing outside the primary tier of federative grants—a status that initially opened the door for her to enter the Behobia—she continues to reach podiums on the regional and national circuits, including a third-place finish at the Behobia in 2024.
Managing Physical Setbacks Ahead of the Marathon Debut
Preparation for her upcoming autumn races has not been without interruption. Following the recent Spanish Championships, where she competed in the 5,000 meters, Achilles tendon issues forced her to pause training temporarily. Melero noted that the full 42.195-kilometer marathon distance commands immense respect, pointing out that her training volume remains modest compared to traditional marathon specialists. She recorded her highest weekly training mileage of the year ahead of this block, totaling 100 kilometers. Having studied the San Sebastián course layout closely, she enters Sunday’s competition with established confidence and full readiness to contest the victory.
