Ecuador’s top-flight clubs will compete in a newly structured tournament beginning in the 2027 season, following an initiative presented by LigaPro president Miguel Ángel Loor. The newly designed Copa de la Liga will insert itself directly into the calendar immediately after the completion of the opening 15 rounds of the premier domestic championship.
Tournament Format and Group Stage Mechanics
The 16 clubs currently competing in Serie A will be divided into four distinct groups under a round-robin format. Each of the four groups will consist of four teams playing to secure one of the two available advancement spots per bracket. According to the blueprint outlined during a press presentation at UEES in Samborondón, the structuring of these four-team groups guarantees that every bracket will contain at least one traditional fixture of Ecuadorian football, heightening competitive stakes and television interest early in the bracket phase.
Once the group stage concludes, the top two finishers from each of the four pools will advance directly to the knockout rounds. The eight surviving clubs will then contest a two-legged quarterfinal phase, followed by two-legged semifinals, culminating in a two-legged final to crown the inaugural champion of the cup competition.
Qualification Stakes and Continental Rewards
Beyond domestic silverware, the competition offers a direct pathway to continental football. The winner of the Copa de la Liga will be awarded the Ecuador 4 berth in the Copa Sudamericana. League organizers factored potential overlapping qualifications into the rules: if the tournament champion has already secured a superior international spot through the annual aggregate table, the Copa Sudamericana berth will pass directly to the tournament runner-up.
To preserve sporting incentives throughout the knockout rounds, hosting rights for the return legs of the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final will be awarded to the club holding the superior position in the corresponding competitive standings.
Regulatory Hurdles and Implementation Timeline
While LigaPro officials have mapped out the operational schedule for 2027, the tournament framework still requires formal authorization. The project must be submitted to the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) for official review and ratification before the competition format is permanently cemented into the national calendar.
