The triumph followed a bronze medal performance in the men’s team event, which similarly ended a 16-year drought for Thailand in that category since the 2010 Guangzhou Games.
For the runner-up, the silver medal represented a milestone for Singaporean badminton. Loh became the first shuttler from Singapore to reach an Asian Games final, cementing a historic run through the tournament bracket despite falling short in the title match.
Indonesian Men’s Doubles Pair Overcomes Four-Year Drought Against China
In the men’s doubles final, Indonesia’s Daniel Marthin and Leo Rolly claimed the gold medal by defeating China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang. The Indonesian pair dropped the opening game before surging back to secure a 19-21, 21-13, 21-13 victory, earning Indonesia its third gold medal of the Games.
The win carried added significance for Daniel and Leo, who had not beaten the Chinese duo in four years. Their previous victory against Liang and Wang came at the Singapore Open.
“We kept to our game plan and communicated well. We are also thankful to the support team and the fans. Thankfully, everything went smoothly,” Daniel said following the match. “The last time we beat them was at the Singapore Open, so that gave us extra motivation. If not now, then when?”
Historical Context of Asian Games Badminton Dominance
The men’s doubles victory allows Indonesia to reclaim a continental title that the nation once dominated at the Asian Games. The historical lineage of the event stretches back to the late Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, who initiated an Indonesian gold run at Guangzhou 2010. Hendra subsequently defended the title with Mohd Ahsan at Incheon 2014, and Marcus Fernaldi and Kevin Sanjaya extended the streak at the Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Games.
That lengthy regional dominance was interrupted at Hangzhou 2022 when India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty captured the gold medal. Daniel and Leo’s victory reestablishes Indonesian success in one of badminton’s most competitive disciplines.
