The Italian government and the City of Naples have finalized a funding agreement to modernize the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, ensuring the venue meets UEFA standards to host matches during the 2032 European Championship. The project, which involves a total investment of 200 million euros, is designed to secure Italy’s role as a co-host alongside Turkey and finalize the necessary infrastructure upgrades for the tournament.
State and Municipal Funding for the Stadio Maradona
The financial framework for the stadium’s renovation relies on a partnership between national and local authorities. According to information presented for the October 6 meeting of the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS), the government will provide 150 million euros through a rotation fund. Of this total, 5 million euros are earmarked for initial design and safety measures, while 145 million euros will support comprehensive structural modernization.

The remaining 50 million euros are being provided by the City of Naples. Mayor Gaetano Manfredi’s administration recently authorized this allocation from municipal funds, completing the 200-million-euro budget required for the project. This commitment follows an agreement established in April 2026 between the City of Naples and the Campania Region to facilitate strategic improvements to the Fuorigrotta-based facility.
Infrastructure Timeline and Compliance Requirements
The renovation plan follows a strict timeline intended to meet UEFA’s 2030 deadline for compliance verification. Construction at the Stadio Maradona is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with a target completion date of December 31, 2029. These upgrades are essential for the stadium to remain a candidate in the final selection of host venues for Euro 2032.
Antonio Iannone, a senator of Fdi and undersecretary for Transport, noted that the state intervention aims to resolve previous administrative blocks related to European funding. The government’s move to modify the cohesion agreement with the Campania Region allows the project to proceed without the legal complications that previously hindered the allocation of resources. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is currently preparing the initial documentation for UEFA, with the Maradona stadium serving as a primary candidate for the tournament.
Concurrent Upgrades for Salerno’s Sporting Facilities
The CIPESS deliberation also covers a broader regional investment plan, allocating 139 million euros for sporting infrastructure in Salerno. This package includes 116,694,626.57 euros for the reconstruction of the Stadio Arechi. Additional funds are designated for the demolition of the Campo Volpe and the construction of a new facility on the site, which will serve as a temporary home for Salernitana while the main stadium undergoes renovations.
The Italian government has framed these investments as a coordinated effort to ensure the Campania region is prepared to host Euro 2032 matches.
