Mauricio Pochettino has broken his silence on the Manchester City financial charges, stating that the situation leaves him feeling it is “very sad” that celebrated achievements may not be real, while questioning where the Premier League’s oversight was during the years in question.

Manchester City is confronting severe potential consequences after an independent panel reached its decision in the long-running case concerning the Premier League’s financial rules. Sources told BBC Sport that the club has been found guilty of breaching 114 of the 115 rules it was accused of breaking. The allegations cover the period between 2009 and 2018, during which the Citizens claimed multiple major trophies. While the club maintains its denial of any wrongdoing—a stance unchanged since February 2023—and is expected to appeal the verdict, the looming sanctions could include the stripping of past titles or expulsion from the English top flight.
Pochettino Questions the Integrity of Past Eras
Mauricio Pochettino, the 54-year-old former manager of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, addressed the severity of the case. Pochettino highlighted the difficulty of issuing a proportional punishment when a club is found culpable on 114 separate counts. Comparing the situation to past penalties handed down to other clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Everton for breaches, the Argentine manager voiced deep concern over the broader implications for sporting integrity.
“It is very difficult to determine a fair punishment when someone is found guilty in 114 cases out of 115 accusations,” Pochettino stated. “There are other clubs like Nottingham Forest or Everton that broke the rules and received other punishments, whether it was a points deduction or fines.”
Pochettino reflected on the period when his Tottenham side contested the Premier League title against Chelsea. “I said it already back then regarding the situation around Chelsea when we were fighting with them for the title,” he noted. “They were better because they got more points, but at the same time, they were breaking the rules. How to fix that now?”
Concerns Over Premier League Control Mechanisms
Beyond the specific penalties facing Manchester City, Pochettino directed sharp criticism at the governing body itself, questioning how such widespread financial violations could occur unchecked over nearly a decade. He emphasized that the volume of proven breaches points to a failure within English football governance.
“It is a very complex situation that, given the scale of the verdict, causes astonishment,” Pochettino said. “It is entirely appropriate to ask where the controls were when such rule-breaking was happening. That is what strikes me the most.”
He added that the cloud hanging over the division strips away the legitimacy of past competition. “It is a very sad situation, because what has already been achieved and what was celebrated may not have been real. We lived through a period in which sporting justice did not exist. If it is true that they broke 114 rules, we lived through a period of delusion. No type of punishment will make it possible to repair what was done, and the Premier League’s controls are severely damaged.”
Long Legal Road Ahead for the Premier League
The independent panel’s findings mark a milestone in a case that has cast a shadow over English football, though the resolution remains distant. Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has previously indicated that the complete legal process and subsequent appeals could take several years to resolve. Meanwhile, other top-flight clubs have begun seeking legal counsel regarding potential compensation claims stemming from the violations during the 2009–2018 era.
