Karl Toko-Ekambi signs with Qatari club Umm Salal

Free agent striker Karl Toko-Ekambi has signed with Qatari Second Division club Umm Salal SC through the end of the season, passing on a potential reunion with manager Bruno Genesio at Olympique de Marseille due to strict financial regulations.

The End of Marseille’s Pursuit

Olympique de Marseille ultimately could not pursue Karl Toko-Ekambi during the summer transfer window or in the weeks following its closure. Despite the club facing significant attacking struggles and a desire from manager Bruno Genesio to explore reinforcements, financial constraints prevented any move. Marseille officials confirmed during August that the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG) would not have accepted even a minor salary increase under the club’s budgetary restrictions, effectively locking OM out of the free-agent market.

A Familiar Connection That Never Materialized

At 34 years old, the Cameroon international was available on a free transfer after concluding his contract with Al-Arabi SC. Al-Arabi opted against offering him a new deal in Doha, where Toko-Ekambi had recorded five goals in nine appearances after joining the club in January 2026. Given his availability for zero euro, a move to Marseille would have reunited him with Genesio. The two previously worked together at Olympique Lyonnais, and Genesio later brought the forward to Rennes in an effort to revitalize his career.

Heading to Umm Salal SC

With the door at Marseille firmly shut and no viable path back to Ligue 1 under the DNCG’s watchful eye, Toko-Ekambi waited a month past the transfer deadline before resolving his future. He ultimately chose a lucrative opportunity in the Middle East, signing a short-term contract with Umm Salal SC to play in the second tier of Qatari football.
