Juventus is weighing a January departure for midfielder Teun Koopmeiners after the Dutch international failed to secure a consistent starting role under coach Luciano Spalletti during the opening months of the 2026–2027 season, according to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport.
Transfer Strategy and Valuation Challenges at Juventus
The Italian club acquired Koopmeiners from Atalanta in August 2024 for a fee of 51,3 million euros plus add-ons. That substantial investment now restricts the maneuvers of club officials, as selling the player below the threshold that would trigger a capital loss is to be avoided. During the summer transfer window, Turkish side Beşiktaş pursued the midfielder without persuading him to make the move, while clubs including Galatasaray, Monaco, Everton, Newcastle United, and unnamed Saudi Arabian sides previously monitored his situation.
Juventus previously utilized a temporary loan departure to revitalize the career of forward Nico Gonzalez during the 2025 season after a subdued campaign. Club management views a similar temporary or permanent exit as a potential solution for Koopmeiners if his on-field performances do not improve significantly over the autumn months.
On-Field Struggles and Midfield Competition
Despite contributing a goal against Parma and providing an assist for Federico Gatti’s equalizing goal against Milan at the start of the 2026–2027 campaign, Koopmeiners has struggled to replicate the form he displayed at Atalanta.
Midfielder Khephren Thuram has been sidelined following surgery on September 3 for a patellar chondropathy in his right knee, while Manuel Locatelli underwent an external meniscus operation on his right knee and is not expected to return until the spring. Despite these absences opening up space in the lineup, Koopmeiners faces competition from Douglas Luiz and Pape Matar Sarr, leaving a three-month window for the Dutch midfielder to prove his value before the winter transfer window opens.
