The KSV Homberg judo squad experienced a highly active and successful weekend across three separate regional and international tournaments in North Rhine-Westphalia, highlighted by a strong U11 team victory, a historic Special Olympics debut, and solid representation at an international cup.
U11 League Success in Moers
Competing alongside the KSV Moers in a joint youth partnership, the KSV Homberg U11 team delivered a dominant performance against the ASV Einigkeit Süchteln. The combined squad secured an 8:2 match victory, backed by a clear 75:20 score advantage in the secondary evaluation metrics. Beyond the primary grappling bouts, the youth competition also featured team relay games, where the Moers and Homberg youngsters prevailed 2:1 to wrap up a comprehensive club success.
Special Olympics Debut in Essen
The club achieved a notable milestone at the 18th Special Olympics Nordrhein-Westfalen (SONRW) judo tournament in Essen, marking the KSV Homberg’s first-ever appearance at the event. Operating under specialized formats that group competitors into performance-adjusted classes to ensure fair and balanced matches, club representative Jan P. put together an impressive run. He tallied two wins against a single loss to capture a strong third-place finish in his division.
International Action at the Bayer Judo Cup
On a much larger stage, the 10th International Bayer Judo Cup in Leverkusen brought together roughly 1,200 judoka representing 227 clubs across five countries. Utilizing up to eight simultaneous competition mats inside the Leverkusen athletics hall, the tournament featured deep international fields from nations including Belgium and the Netherlands alongside numerous German clubs.
The KSV Homberg originally intended to field a larger roster, but injuries and illness sidelined Valentin Gatzlaff and Tom Jäger prior to the event. Left as the sole Homberger entrant, Ahmet Akyüz stepped into the intense international bracket and finished his tournament day with a record of one victory and two losses. The club subsequently issued well wishes for a quick recovery to both Gatzlaff and Jäger.
