Surinamese badminton players Rivano Bisphan and Imani Mangroe saw their singles campaigns conclude at the South American Games in Santa Fe, Argentina, following hard-fought losses in straight sets.
Competing at the ISEF N°11 venue, Bisphan faced Colombia’s Miguel Quirama. The two athletes had previously crossed paths earlier in the competition during the mixed doubles draw, where Bisphan and Mangroe teamed up against Quirama. Bisphan opened the singles encounter with aggressive intent, staying close to his opponent in the early exchanges before falling behind 4-3. Quirama capitalized on a four-point scoring run to extend his advantage to 12-4, ultimately securing the opening set 21-11.
The second set proved to be a tightly contested affair. Bisphan established an early 4-1 lead and maintained control through the middle phase, pulling ahead 15-12. Quirama responded by claiming six consecutive points to move ahead 18-16, sparking an intense battle down the stretch. As fatigue set in, both players fought for every point before Quirama edged out a 27-25 victory in the extended set to advance to the quarterfinals, where he faces Brazil’s Jonathan Santos.
Imani Mangroe encountered a similarly difficult challenge against Brazil’s Juliana Viana in the round of 16. Viana took an early 6-2 lead, but Mangroe rallied to level the score at 9-9. The Brazilian then seized momentum with a 13-point scoring run to close out the first set 21-9. Mangroe claimed the opening point of the second set, but Viana quickly reclaimed the initiative with nine unanswered points, sealing the second set 21-6.
The eliminations of Bisphan and Mangroe mark the conclusion of Suriname’s participation in the badminton events at the 2026 South American Games.
