Rafael Jódar and Carlos Alcaraz delivered a dominant opening day for Team Europe at the Laver Cup, securing victories in both singles and doubles play to stake their side to a 3-1 lead over Team World at London’s O2 Arena.
Jódar Shines on Debut in Front of Tennis Legends
Playing in his first career Laver Cup match, the 20-year-old Madrid native Rafael Jódar dismissed Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The performance caught the attention of tournament icons Roger Federer and Rod Laver, who watched from the stands at the O2 Arena—the same venue where Federer played the final match of his professional career four years ago.
Despite Bublik’s dangerous serve and unorthodox style on the fast indoor hard courts of the British capital, Jódar controlled the tempo throughout the contest. He converted four service breaks to wrap up the victory in under an hour and a half, reinforcing his comfort on major stages.
The match also brought an unusual equipment issue to light: recurring shoelace breakages. «It’s because of how I slide,» Jódar said after the win. «Especially on these fast cement courts. When I hit my forehand or run toward the net for a drop shot, I put a lot of tension on the shoe, that’s why so many break. Luckily I have several pairs of shoes and could change them quickly.»
Team Europe Establishes Early Advantage
Jódar’s win marked Team Europe’s second point of the day under captain Yannick Noah, following Casper Ruud’s three-set victory over Francisco Cerúndolo. Team World, captained by Andre Agassi, claimed a single point through Brandon Nakashima’s win against Jakub Menšík.
With the score sitting at 2-1, Alcaraz took the court for the concluding doubles rubber alongside Menšík. The pair faced Taylor Fritz and Bublik, emerging with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Alcaraz drew the loudest ovations from the London crowd and displayed growing chemistry in the doubles format alongside the hard-serving Menšík. Their combined firepower wore down Fritz and a visibly hampered Bublik, who played with protective strapping on his left knee after pulling double duty on the opening day.
Looking Ahead to Saturday’s Schedule
Following Friday’s results, Team Europe leads 3-1. The competition resumes Saturday with three singles matches and one doubles fixture. As the tournament shifts into its second phase, match victories will double in value, rewarding two points per win.
Noah is expected to pencil Alcaraz into the singles lineup for both Saturday and Sunday, using the Spanish star as the marquee draw of the weekend.
