LeBron James details why he signed a two-year contract with the 76ers

LeBron James has detailed his decision to sign a two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers in July, pointing to a long-standing friendship with All-Star Tyrese Maxey, a surprise blockbuster trade, and a desire to help Joel Embiid capture his first NBA championship.

The Turning Point: A Surprise Trade and Free Agency

Entering the offseason following his twenty-third NBA campaign—his eighth with the Los Angeles Lakers—James initially contemplated retirement. After spending time with family and completing pretraining workouts that left him feeling physically and mentally strong, the four-time NBA champion decided to extend his career. In an episode of his podcast “Mind the Game” alongside co-host Steve Nash, James revealed that Philadelphia was not initially on his radar.

That situation shifted dramatically when the Philadelphia 76ers engineered a surprising trade with Boston to acquire NBA Finals MVP and champion Jaylen Brown. The unexpected roster addition altered James’s perception of the franchise’s trajectory. The move positioned the Sixers as one of the most ambitious squads in the league, giving James the competitive environment he sought after concluding his tenure in Los Angeles with a 20,9-point, 6,1-rebound, and 7,2-assist per-game average.

Deep Bonds with Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid

Beyond the acquisition of Brown, personal connections heavily influenced James’s choice of destination. James and Tyrese Maxey share an agency and have maintained a close friendship and training partnership since Maxey entered the league. When James officially notified the Lakers that he would not return, Maxey was among the first to reach out.

“When I became a free agent and we decided to give the Lakers a heads-up that I wasn’t going back, he was one of the first people who called me,” James stated on the podcast. He praised Maxey’s consistent intensity, noting that he is the same person every day, which is rare in sports.

The veteran forward also set his sights on supporting Joel Embiid, who has secured an NBA MVP award, two scoring titles, and an Olympic gold medal, but has yet to advance past the second round of the postseason since being drafted third overall by Philadelphia in 2014. Last season, the Sixers finished with a 45-37 record before suffering a sweep in the second round at the hands of the eventual champion New York Knicks.

“He’s accomplished everything in our league, and the only thing missing is a championship. And I want to try to help him get his first one,” James explained, emphasizing Embiid’s burden as the face of “The Process” for over a decade. “He has a whole city on his shoulders. … And hopefully I can be, so to speak, that missing piece that helps him get over the hump.”

Looking Ahead to Media Day and Training Camp

James, who holds a resume featuring 22 All-Star selections, 21 All-NBA nods, and four Finals MVPs, is scheduled to address reporters for the first time as a Sixer on Monday during the team’s media day in Camden, New Jersey. Training camp for the franchise gets underway the following week.
