The Tampa Bay Rays are bringing back their classic road gray uniforms featuring the iconic “Tampa Bay” script and gradient lettering for the first time in nearly two decades, according to MLB.com. The updated look, which mirrors the franchise’s inaugural visual identity from 1998 to 2000, will debut during Game 2 of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
A Nostalgic Return to the Inaugural Era
A stylized devil ray swims beneath the “TAMPA BAY” wordmark across the chest, complemented by navy blue piping. The uniform replaces the Columbia blue “burst” logo jersey that previously served as the club’s primary road attire.
This marks the first time the franchise has featured “Tampa Bay” on its primary road jerseys since the conclusion of the 2007 season, just before the organization shortened its name and dropped “Devil” from its moniker. The team previously brought back the original home Devil Rays uniform design as an alternate option in 2023, followed by an O.G.-style wordmark on its City Connect set introduced in 2024.
Modern Tweaks and Fan Involvement
While inspired by the late-1990s aesthetic, the newly unveiled uniforms include several modern updates. The navy blue caps feature a modernized version of the original 1998 “TB” logo, replacing the historical black accents with the team’s contemporary navy blue color scheme.
The decision to adopt this specific design followed a public outreach effort. According to team statements, the organization ran social media polls beginning on March 6 asking fans to choose among four throwback-inspired concepts, with the winning option securing more than 60 percent of the vote within hours.
“These uniforms celebrate our long-term commitment to Tampa Bay,” Rays chief executive officer Ken Babby said in a statement reported by MLB.com. “As our team travels the country, we do so with tremendous admiration for our home. Tampa Bay is always in our hearts and that’s why we will wear it across our chest.”
Standings Implications and Ballpark Context
The timing of the uniform rollout coincides with a critical juncture in the baseball calendar. The debut at Yankee Stadium takes place as Tampa Bay pursues its first American League East division title since 2021.
