The South Korean men’s basketball national team is gearing up for its opening match at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with a roster anchored by a new generation of overseas and domestic talent, according to sports reports from local outlets.
Opening Match Against Saudi Arabia in Nagoya
Led by head coach Nikolais Mazurs, the South Korean squad opens Group A play against Saudi Arabia on September 10 at 4:00 PM local time (Japan Standard Time) at the Aichi International Arena in Nagoya, Japan. The tournament’s team sports begin ahead of the official opening ceremony, which is scheduled for September 19 at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium, running through October 4.
South Korea finds itself grouped alongside Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and host nation Japan. Following the September 10 opener, the team faces Indonesia on September 11 at 4:00 PM and concludes the group stage against Japan on September 13 at 7:00 PM.
Chasing Redemption with a Young Core
The national team enters the competition aiming to reclaim past glory. South Korea last won the Asian Games gold medal at the 2014 Incheon Games, followed by a bronze medal at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games. At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, the team finished in seventh place.
Yeo's return to the senior national team last year marked the formation of this core group, which faces mounting expectations.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Lee Hyun-jung emphasized the team’s commitment. “I am ready to throw my body on the line to ensure we win every game,” he said, according to sports coverage.
Roster Adjustments and Regional Rankings
International Basketball Federation (FIBA) world rankings place Japan highest in the group at No. 22, followed by South Korea at No. 57, Saudi Arabia at No. 65, and Indonesia at No. 94. South Korea dropped two friendly matches against Japan in Tokyo last month, including a 95-66 defeat that marked the team’s largest margin of defeat against its neighbor. However, Japan will play without key NBA players Rui Hachimura and Yuki Kawamura.
South Korea’s roster has also faced setbacks. Forward Ahn Young-jun of SK was forced off the team due to a finger dislocation sustained during a final tune-up match against the Philippines. Moon Jeong-hyun of KT joined the squad as a replacement. Additionally, Choi Jun-yong is scheduled to join the team on September 15 due to prior international window commitments, leaving the roster short-handed through parts of the group stage.
“As a team, we have to fight our opponents across every position and show a willingness to battle hard,” Mazurs said. Noting the team’s relative size disadvantage, the coach stressed that every player must contribute defensively and on the boards.
Tournament Format and Qualification
The Asian Games men’s basketball tournament features 12 teams divided into three groups of four. The group winners, runners-up, and the two best third-place teams advance to the 8-team tournament.
