The New England Patriots resolved their crowded wide receiver room by trading Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick. Speaking to reporters in Cleveland on Thursday night following New England’s preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns, head coach Mike Vrabel shared new insight into the decision.
According to Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, Boutte did not have a guaranteed path to playing time on game days. That was one place where we do have some depth, and I think for all parties involved, that was probably the best thing,

“Without injuries, Kayshon probably would have been inactive. Unfortunately, it just, it’s kind of the way it was. It’s just with him not playing special teams.”

Boutte caught 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns during the 2025 regular season, ranking fifth among qualified NFL pass-catchers with 16.7 yards per reception. He also added nine receptions for 168 yards and one touchdown during New England’s run to Super Bowl LX, including a three-catch, 75-yard performance against the Texans in the AFC divisional round.
A Crowded Receiver Room Forces New England’s Hand
The writing had been on the wall for Boutte since the offseason when executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf and the front office aggressively overhauled the pass-catching corps. New England acquired A.J. Brown in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles and signed former Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs. Those additions pushed Boutte down the depth chart.
Brown, Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism. With DeMario Douglas handling slot duties and the top spots secured, Boutte faced an uphill battle entering the final year of his rookie contract.
Boutte had previously requested a trade in March 2026. Despite that trade request, wide receivers coach Todd Downing praised the wideout’s professionalism throughout training camp. Jaylen Reed Arrives in Foxborough to Bolster Defensive Depth
In return for the former sixth-round draft pick, New England secured Penn State product Jaylen Reed. Selected by Houston in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the 6-foot, 212-pound safety appeared in seven regular-season games as a rookie before starting both of Houston’s playoff games.
