New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel revealed Thursday night that traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte would have been inactive for Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots swapped Boutte to the Houston Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick as roster cuts loom.

The New England Patriots resolved their crowded wide receiver room by trading Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick. Speaking to reporters in Cleveland on Thursday night following New England’s preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns, head coach Mike Vrabel shared new insight into the decision.

According to Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, Boutte did not have a guaranteed path to playing time on game days. That was one place where we do have some depth, and I think for all parties involved, that was probably the best thing, Vrabel said.

“Without injuries, Kayshon probably would have been inactive. Unfortunately, it just, it’s kind of the way it was. It’s just with him not playing special teams.”

Boutte caught 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns during the 2025 regular season, ranking fifth among qualified NFL pass-catchers with 16.7 yards per reception. He also added nine receptions for 168 yards and one touchdown during New England’s run to Super Bowl LX, including a three-catch, 75-yard performance against the Texans in the AFC divisional round.

A Crowded Receiver Room Forces New England’s Hand

The writing had been on the wall for Boutte since the offseason when executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf and the front office aggressively overhauled the pass-catching corps. New England acquired A.J. Brown in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles and signed former Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs. Those additions pushed Boutte down the depth chart.

Brown, Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism. With DeMario Douglas handling slot duties and the top spots secured, Boutte faced an uphill battle entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Boutte had previously requested a trade in March 2026. Despite that trade request, wide receivers coach Todd Downing praised the wideout’s professionalism throughout training camp. The way that he has just been a pro and shown up every day, I have a great relationship with Kayshon, and I value that a lot, Downing noted earlier in August.

Jaylen Reed Arrives in Foxborough to Bolster Defensive Depth

In return for the former sixth-round draft pick, New England secured Penn State product Jaylen Reed. Selected by Houston in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the 6-foot, 212-pound safety appeared in seven regular-season games as a rookie before starting both of Houston’s playoff games.

Eliot Wolf explained that the franchise followed Reed closely during the 2025 draft process. Jaylen was a guy that we identified in the draft process as someone that might pick, and he ended up going before we could take him, Wolf told bostonherald.com.

Reed will compete for a reserve role behind projected safeties Kevin Byard and Craig Woodson while offering immediate value on special teams. Meanwhile, Boutte joins a Houston Texans offense that recently lost Jayden Higgins to a season-ending knee injury.

Boutte Bids Farewell to Patriots Nation After Three Seasons

Before reporting to his new team, Boutte published a farewell message on social media reflecting on his time in New England after arriving as the 187th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. New England, it’s hard to put into words what these last few years have meant to me, Boutte wrote in a statement shared on Instagram.

New teammate A.J. Brown also offered a public sign-off to the departing receiver on social media, writing It was a pleasure bro! Stand up guy! as reported by Patriots Wire. Vrabel echoed that respect, praising Boutte for sharing his personal growth and professional maturity following a challenging start to his professional career.
