The New England Patriots traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans on Monday for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick. The move resolves a roster logjam in New England while giving Houston an immediate replacement for the injured Jayden Higgins.
Roster Crunch and Contract Desires in New England
The trade brings an end to mounting speculation surrounding Boutte’s future in Foxborough. After the Patriots acquired A.J. Brown in a trade with the Eagles and signed free-agent wideout Romeo Doubs during the offseason, the wide receiver room grew heavily congested.
Drafted in the sixth round out of LSU in 2023, Boutte overcame early-career obstacles, including a rookie season marred by limited snaps and an arrest on illegal gambling charges that were later dropped. Under the guidance of coach Jerod Mayo and quarterback Drake Maye, Boutte carved out a significant role. He caught 43 passes for 589 yards and three touchdowns in 2024 before following up with 33 receptions for 551 yards and six touchdowns last season.

Houston’s Urgent Need Following Jayden Higgins’ Injury
The Texans moved quickly to acquire Boutte following a major injury to second-year wide receiver Jayden Higgins, who tore his ACL during a joint practice session with the Las Vegas Raiders. Higgins had logged 41 catches for 525 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie, establishing himself as a reliable big-bodied target opposite Nico Collins.
With Tank Dell continuing his recovery from a major leg injury suffered in 2024, Houston faced a severe depth shortage behind Collins. General manager Nick Caserio and the coaching staff turned to Boutte to stabilize the offense. Bleacher Report noted that while the Texans also added veterans Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones, Boutte is expected to step in immediately as a primary outside option for quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Secondary Depth and the Return for New England
Reed played seven games as a rookie for Houston, logging 73 defensive snaps and 113 special teams snaps before starting both playoff contests.
New England head coach Mike Vrabel and personnel executive Eliot Wolf targeted safety depth to complement starting veterans Kevin Byard and Craig Woodson. With Kyle Williams showing strong preseason form and securing his standing in a receiver room now featuring Brown, Doubs, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, and Efton Chism III, the Patriots opted to reinforce their defensive backfield while adding a 2028 seventh-round draft pick to the ledger ahead of the league’s roster cutdown deadline.
