Instead, the Miami Dolphins stepped in with a trade offer to secure the 6-foot-5, 314-pound lineman before he hit the wire. Rather than losing the former Penn State standout for nothing, the Patriots secured a 2028 sixth-round draft pick while sending Wallace and a 2029 seventh-round selection south to Miami.
Caedan Wallace Sees Playing Time Dwindle After Roster Shifts
Drafted 68th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Wallace signed a four-year, $6,058,224 rookie contract that included a $1,225,980 signing bonus and a scheduled $1,648,174 cap figure for the 2026 season. Expectations were high for him to develop into a fixture on the offensive line, but his time on the field dropped sharply after his rookie campaign.
As Boston.com detailed, Wallace logged 129 offensive snaps—representing 35 percent of New England’s total—during his 2024 rookie year, which included two starts at left tackle against the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills. By his sophomore season in 2025, that usage plummeted to just eight offensive snaps across four total appearances.
The Patriots steadily overhauled their offensive line depth over the intervening drafts, adding Will Campbell, Jared Wilson, and Marcus Bryant in 2025 alongside first-round pick Caleb Lomu in 2026. Entering this year’s training camp as an interior backup, Wallace slipped further down the depth chart behind second-year player Mehki Butler, prompting the team’s decision to move on.
Roster Ripple Effects and the Return of Niko Lalos
With Wallace’s departure, the list of remaining New England 2024 draft picks grew even thinner, leaving quarterback Drake Maye and cornerback Marcellas Dial Jr. as the sole members of that draft class still on the active roster. Their second-round pick from that year, wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk, was traded to the Saints in 2025 before eventually retiring from the NFL.
To fill the open roster spot left by the trade, New England re-signed long snapper Niko Lalos. Lalos originally joined the Patriots on March 16, 2026, before being released on May 20, 2026. The 28-year-old Dartmouth product originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the New York Giants in 2020 as a defensive end before spending time with the New Orleans Saints and the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons.
The transaction leaves the Patriots with a complete roster as they head toward joint practices and their upcoming preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
