The Timnas Indonesia squad is set to compete in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, which runs from September 23 to October 3, 2026, with Indonesia serving as the host nation for the tournament’s top tier, according to tournament announcements shared by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora).
Tournament Format and Division Structure
The competition operates under a newly established format split into two separate tiers: the Premier Division and the Challenge Division. According to tournament details released by organizers, the Premier Division features eight of the highest-ranked national teams in the Southeast Asian region. Indonesia anchors Group A of the Premier Division alongside India, Malaysia, and Singapore. Group B comprises Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines.
Meanwhile, the Challenge Division is hosted in Hong Kong and features Myanmar, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, and Timor Leste. Unlike standard multi-stage tournaments, each division features a round-robin group phase that leads directly to a single final match for the group winners, eliminating the traditional semifinal round entirely. This structure places immediate pressure on every competing side to secure results from their opening fixtures.
Schedule Alignment with FIFA Matchdays
A key structural advantage of the upcoming competition is its scheduling within the official international window. According to PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir, the tournament is integrated directly into the FIFA Matchday calendar for September and October 2026. This official window guarantees that clubs must release players for national team selection, distinguishing the ASEAN Cup from regional events held outside official FIFA dates.
“The unique thing about this FIFA ASEAN is that it is included in the FIFA Matchday calendar combined in the months of September and October,” Erick Thohir said, as reported by domestic sports coverage. “When looking at this, certainly all of Indonesia’s best players can be present, and we hope the achievement can be maximum.”
Venue Preparation and Squad Availability
Preparation is underway across host cities to support the matches. Regency Government officials in Bandung confirmed local venue readiness, while Jakarta authorities prepared designated training grounds to accommodate visiting squads. Matches in Indonesia will utilize major venues including Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta and Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in West Bandung Regency, according to official planning updates.
With clubs obligated to release players under FIFA regulations, national team selectors gain the opportunity to call upon Europe-based professionals and continental diaspora players. Athletes such as Jay Idzes, Kevin Diks, Elkan Baggot, and Calvin Verdonk are eligible for selection, removing the roster constraints that previously affected regional tournaments held outside official windows. These fixtures will officially count toward the FIFA World Ranking, providing direct implications for national standing tables as the Garuda squad prepares to host the September fixtures.
