Seiko Gakuin High School secured its sixth and 20th overall Fukushima prefectural title on Sept. 28, 2026, defeating Konan High School in a dramatic 10th-inning walk-off during the final of the 78th Autumn Tohoku District High School Baseball Fukushima Prefecture Tournament at York Iwaki Stadium.
Extra-Inning Drama at York Iwaki Stadium
The championship match went down to the wire under the tournament’s tiebreak rules, with Seiko Gakuin claiming the decisive run in the bottom of the 10th inning. For much of the contest, however, Konan held the upper hand, blanking Seiko Gakuin through the opening five frames to build a 3-0 lead.
Seiko Gakuin mounted its comeback starting in the sixth inning. Riku Shiotani, the team’s clean-up hitter, sparked the offense with a bunt single in front of the pitcher. Following a hit-by-pitch, teammate Keishi Sakai drove a double to cut the deficit to one run. Another successful sacrifice bunt in the seventh set up the equalizing run, drawing the score level and ultimately forcing extra innings.
Shoma Shiki, Seiko Gakuin’s captain, noted after the game that the squad leaned on fundamental small ball. Because the players recognized their own limitations at the plate, they spent extensive time during B-team practices refining their bunting skills to execute in high-pressure situations.
Freshman Steps Up in the 10th Inning
The game was decided by freshman Goto Keigo, who entered the match in the ninth inning in left field. Self-described as a “defense person” and “third-base coach and defense person”, Goto had not taken a single official or practice-game plate appearance, according to manager Tomoya Saito.
With one out in the 10th and the bases loaded, a missed squeeze play resulted in the second out, thrusting Goto into a high-stakes scenario. Receiving a calming message from a bench messenger to observe his surroundings and settle down, Goto worked the count before connecting on the fifth pitch to drive in the winning run.
Surrounded by teammates celebrating as he returned to the dugout, Goto expressed disbelief at the outcome, calling the walk-off hit a miracle. Saito praised his squad for battling through early deficits to secure the trophy under difficult circumstances.
Road to the Tohoku District Tournament
The top three finishers from the Fukushima prefectural tournament—Seiko Gakuin, Konan, and Iwaki Yumoto—will advance to the main Autumn Tohoku District Tournament. That regional competition is scheduled to begin on Oct. 12, 2026, in Miyagi Prefecture.
