Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Tomáš Čvančara is nearing an exit from the Bundesliga club this summer after sporting director Rouven Schröder confirmed that several teams have expressed interest in the Czech striker. According to reporting by the German newspaper Bild and football outlet efotbal.cz, the German club plans to sell the 25-year-old player because he no longer fits into the squad’s long-term plans under coach Eugen Polanský.
Transfer Stance and Valuation
Mönchengladbach is ready to listen to transfer offers significantly lower than the initial investment made three years ago, when the club paid 10,5 million euros without bonuses to acquire the forward from Sparta Prague. Schröder indicated that the club would be satisfied with recovering roughly a quarter of that original fee, setting potential expectations around three million euros for the 25-year-old.
“Even in his case, something is starting to happen, several clubs have expressed interest,” Schröder told Bild, as reported by efotbal.cz. “However, it is also necessary to take into account his long-term contract with us, which does not quite correspond to the current market. There are a lot of clubs looking for a striker. I can’t imagine Tomáš sitting in the stands with us in two months.”
The eight-time Czech international signed a long-term contract that runs for two more seasons with an annual salary of 2,5 million euros. This high wage packet, combined with a dip in form and playing time, has driven the club’s desire to find a permanent solution before the transfer window closes.
Declining Minutes and Strained Season
Čvančara struggled to cement a regular starting role during the 2024–25 campaign. While he made 27 or 28 league appearances across domestic competitions, the vast majority came as a substitute, starting only seven matches and scoring two goals. The arrival and form of Tim Kleindienst from Heidenheim, alongside Haris Tabakovič, pushed the Czech forward down the pecking order. With additional depth provided by Šut Mačina and recent acquisition Isac Lidberg from Darmstadt, Polanský would currently treat Čvančara as fourth choice in the central attack.
His recent career path also included a turbulent loan spell in Turkey with Antalyaspor, where his playing time diminished following a dispute over unpaid wages that led him to turn to FIFA. A subsequent winter loan move to Scottish Premiership side Celtic offered promise before injuries derailed his momentum. Čvančara underwent surgery at the end of May to repair a torn adductor muscle, which factored into Celtic’s decision not to exercise their purchase option. He has not yet returned to full training during the current pre-season program.
Club History and Statistics
Regarded as one of the most expensive acquisitions in club history—ranking among the top ten buys for Gladbach—Čvančara has found it difficult to consistently produce at the Bundesliga level. Across 54 official appearances for the club known as the Foals (Hříbata), he has scored eight goals and provided two assists since arriving from the Czech Fortuna liga.
Borussia Mönchengladbach returns to competitive action in the coming weeks as preparations for the new season ramp up, leaving a tight window for Schröder and the club’s management to finalize a permanent transfer or loan arrangement for the striker.
