The 27th edition of the Trofeo de la Reina-Copa Almirante Marcial Sánchez Barcaízegui will set a new participation record with 133 vessels, the Real Club Náutico de Valencia (RCNV) announced. Scheduled for July 3–5, the regatta has surpassed its previous historic peak of 126 entries, a milestone set during the city’s hosting of the 32nd America’s Cup.

A Record-Breaking Fleet

The surge in entries marks a significant milestone for one of the Mediterranean’s premier sailing events. According to RCNV officials, the 133 registered boats represent a diverse international field, with participants arriving from Spain, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, and Argentina. The fleet will compete across several classes, including ORC, J80, Sportboat, Open, and Promoción.

The symbolic importance of this record is not lost on organizers. Andrés Arlandis, president of the RCNV, noted that the growth in both the quantity and quality of the fleet validates the club’s long-term strategy to cement the regatta’s status in the Mediterranean circuit. “The numbers speak for themselves,” Arlandis said during the official presentation at the Valencia City Hall. “We are among the best regattas in the Mediterranean.”

The Armada’s Expanded Presence

The regatta, which serves as a tribute to the Spanish Navy (Armada), will feature an increased footprint from military vessels this year. A key addition to the fleet is the Hispania, a TP52 boat operated by the Spanish Navy. Following a successful debut and victory at the Trofeo Conde de Godó in Barcelona, the Hispania is expected to be a primary contender in the competitive ORC 0 class.

Naval commander Jesús Otero highlighted the enduring partnership between the Armada and the RCNV. “The Armada is very grateful that this bond with the regatta and the RCNV is maintained,” Otero stated. He emphasized that the increased participation of military crews strengthens the event’s identity as a tribute to the sea and the institution.

Competition Schedule and Technical Format

The sporting action begins this Friday with the Offshore ORC A2 race, a demanding 220-mile course that acts as a precursor to the main event. Following this, the fleet will transition to windward-leeward races, which are slated to run from July 3 to July 5. The technical demands of these courses, combined with the high caliber of the crews, are expected to test the tactical precision of the international field, according to regatta director Rafel Chirivella.

The event is not strictly confined to the water. The RCNV has scheduled a robust social program to run alongside the races. A highlight of the off-water activities is the traditional Owners’ Dinner, scheduled for July 4. During the ceremony, the VIII International Nautical Communication Award will be presented to journalist Jaume Soler in recognition of his professional career. Additionally, two-time Olympic champion Theresa Zabell is scheduled to present her book, El poder de los 5 aros, prior to the dinner.

The current record is particularly notable given the historical context of Valencia’s maritime activity.
