This win marks a significant milestone as Tanaka became the first Japanese player to win the Swiss Open since Koki Watanabe’s triumph in 2023. Tanaka’s path to the title wasn’t without a challenge. He faced a stern test in the first round against Switzerland’s Julien Scheiwiller, a match where he initially trailed 11-2 in the first set before ultimately securing a 22-20 victory. Following that initial hurdle, Tanaka didn’t drop another set throughout the remainder of the tournament, showcasing his growing confidence and dominance.
Katethong Claims Women’s Singles Crown
In the women’s singles final, Thailand’s Supanida Katethong proved too strong for Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani, the top seed. Katethong, a left-handed player known for her exceptional touch, delivered a composed performance to secure the title. This victory adds another impressive achievement to a growing list of accomplishments for the Thai star.
Doubles Success for Taiwan and China
The doubles events also saw Asian players take center stage. A pair of Taiwanese twins secured the men’s doubles title, overcoming a Danish duo – the only European pair to reach a final in Basel. The women’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions were both won by Chinese pairs, further solidifying Asia’s overall dominance at the tournament.
Yushi Tanaka, a graduate of Nihon University, currently holds a career-high world ranking of 19th, achieved on June 24, 2025. He has previously won three Super 300 titles: the Orléans Masters, the U.S. Open, and now, the Swiss Open. He represents the NTT East Badminton Team.
