Lima has officially started its 300-day countdown to the 20th Pan American Games, setting the stage for a continental gathering that will bring more than 7,000 athletes to Peru between July 23 and August 8, 2027. Organizers confirmed the milestone as preparations accelerate across the capital and neighboring regions to host the massive multi-sport event.
Athletes and Sports Program for Lima 2027
The 17-day competition will feature athletes from 41 countries across the Americas, contesting 38 sports and 59 disciplines. According to the organizing committee, the program spans major Olympic fixtures alongside events deeply rooted in continental sporting traditions. For many competitors, the Pan American Games will serve as a vital qualification pathway toward the Los Ángeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The extensive sports lineup includes athletics, badminton, handball, baseball/softball, bowling, boxing, canoeing, cycling, cricket, equestrianism, climbing, fencing, water skiing, football, and gymnastics. Additional events range from golf, hockey, judo, karate, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, roller sports, and Basque pelota, to modern pentathlon, racquetball, rowing, rugby, squash, surfing, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, archery, shooting, triathlon, sailing, and volleyball.
Venues Across Lima and Callao
Competitions will unfold across several districts in Lima and the constitutional province of Callao. Confirmed venues include the Villa Deportiva Nacional (Videna)—one of the country’s primary athletic complexes—alongside the Villa María del Triunfo sports complex and the Villa El Salvador Sports Center.
Surfing action will return to the natural break at Punta Rocas. Other prominent locations hosting events include the Estadio Nacional, the Eduardo Dibós Coliseum, the Army Equitation School, Las Palmas Air Base, and the Callao Regional Sports Village. The organizing committee stated that preparations continue across all functional areas under the close supervision of Panam Sports.
Leadership Expectations and Regional Legacy
Reflecting on the city’s previous tenure as host in 2019, Panam Sports President Neven Ilic recalled during the organization’s 64th general assembly in Lima on August 27 that he had closed the prior edition as “the best and greatest in history,” expressing confidence that the upcoming Games will surpass that benchmark. Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori emphasized that the event must extend beyond a standard athletic celebration, while International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry predicted an absolute success for the 2027 gathering.
The initial competition schedule will feature early tests in baseball, boxing, handball, and various cycling disciplines, while track and field events will take center stage from August 2 through August 7. Following the conclusion of the Pan American Games, the Parapan American Games Lima 2027 are scheduled to run from August 20 to August 29.
