Mavs Future: Outlook & Predictions

It’s been just over a year since NBA insider Shams Charania sent the basketball world into a frenzy with the news of possibly the most spectacular trade in history. The Dallas Mavericks traded their franchise player and superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. In return, a first-round pick and Anthony Davis, among others, went to Dallas.

A year later, a lot has changed in Dallas. There isn’t much left of “Winning in the Present” and General Manager Nico Harrison. Instead, Cooper Flagg is a new face on the front pages of the Texas newspapers.

And yet the momentous mega-trade involving Doncic now has another punch line. Almost a year later, the Davis chapter in Dallas is history again.

The Mavs sent the big man – who had transformed from championship hope to unreliability due to injury – to the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline along with Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell and Dante Exum.

In return, Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III as well as two first-round and three second-round picks came to Dallas.

In the current season, the 32-year-old Davis has been plagued by bad luck with injuries: although he put up 20.4 points per game, he was only on the floor in 20 of the 50 games of the season. He is currently suffering from a ligament injury in his left hand.

With the trade, the Mavs unofficially finally admit what many fans immediately feared. Harrison, who has now passed away ingloriously, has completely gambled away with his Doncic idea. With Davies’ farewell, the fiasco is complete, because the team no longer has any real chances of winning.

At least not for the moment. But what does the future look like for Dirk Nowitzki’s former team?

US journalist Jeremy Brener from SI.com analyzed: “The Dallas Mavericks are officially raising the white flag (…). The Davis trade is a sign that the team is officially in transition.”

At the same time, he also gives Mavs fans hope: “There is no point in crying over spilled milk and the Mavs should be grateful that they have another potential superstar in Flagg.”

Also Dixon Schuyler from The Associated Press sees the approach as a clear message from the Mavericks front office: “The trade is a big step for Dallas to make Cooper Flagg the next figurehead of the franchise after Doncic.”

But another topic plays a central role for the team from Texas: Above all, the salary savings of around $120 million are likely to play into the Mavs’ hands after Davis’ departure. The formula for success for the future is clear: a powerful team will be built around Flagg over the next few years.

The Mavs also chose the timing of the trade consciously. According to NBA insider Bobby Marks of ESPN By saving Davis’ salary, high luxury tax payments were avoided.

A successful future requires, above all, draft capital, of which the Mavs currently have little and which should be accumulated in the coming years.

Short-term investments in the roster to take advantage of Flagg’s rookie contract would probably be a big mistake, as NBA journalist Kevin Pelton points out: “Trying to peak with Flagg at age 20 doesn’t make nearly as much sense as accumulating players on his timeline to replace the draft picks Dallas has already lost.”

The expert also doesn’t rule out a trade for the last remaining superstar Kyrie Irving: “The same could also apply to Irving as soon as the Mavericks are ready to take this step.” It remains to be seen how those responsible for the Mavs imagine Irving’s future.

One thing is clear, however: Cooper Flagg will be built up in the coming years and shaped into the new face of the franchise. However, if you get a call from Los Angeles regarding a trade offer, you should probably hang up quickly.
