Palmeiras Signs Arias: Beats Fluminense to Deal

O Palm trees won the competition from Fluminense and got closer to hiring Jhon Arias. The Rio club had until last Wednesday (4) to exercise the right of priority in the purchase and try to match the proposal made by Alviverde, set at 25 million euros (R$ 155 million at the current price).

Fluminense signaled an offer of 20 million euros, which was immediately denied by Wolverhampton.

Now, Palmeiras aligns the last bureaucratic details with Jhon Arias’ staff to finalize the negotiations and sign a contract valid for four seasons. The striker arrives at the Football Academy as the second reinforcement of the transfer window, after the signing of Marlon Freitas from Botafogo.

The player moved to England after leading Fluminense to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, in July last year. For Wolves, he has played 26 games, with two goals scored and one assist.

Jhon Arias was traded by the Rio club for 22 million euros – 17 million fixed and another 5 million in variables. Now, he returns to Brazil for a fee around 8 million euros more to defend Palmeiras.

The fact that Wolverhampton was virtually relegated to the second division of the English Championship, combined with the player’s desire to remain at a high level for the World Cup dispute with Colombia, were fundamental factors in Arias accepting a return to Brazil just a few months after moving to Europe.
