Are you familiar with France’s record at the Winter Games? Now is the time to check it out as the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games (from 6 to 22), the 25th edition of the Winter Olympics, take place this February.
On the French list of winners of the Winter Olympics, one man soars well above the others: it is obviously the biathlete Martin Fourcade. With seven medals, including 6 gold and one silver, the Pyrenees is not only the most successful French athlete of the Winter Games but also of the Games in general.
Martin Fourcade was crowned in mass start in Vancouver in 2010 (after the downgrading of Russian Evgeny Ustyugov convicted of doping), in individual and pursuit in Sochi in 2014 as well as in pursuit, mass start and mixed relay in 2018 in Pyeongchang. We must add a silver medal in 2014 in the mass start.
In this ranking he is ahead of a French legend of alpine skiing in the person of Jean-Claude Killytriple gold medalist (downhill, giant, slalom). Killy had achieved the feat of being triple crowned in a single edition, in Grenoble, in 1968.
Then comes another biathlete, Quentin Fillon Maillet and his five medals obtained in Beijing in 2022. “QFM” had been a double Olympic champion in the individual and the pursuit and had also gleaned three silver medals, including one in the sprint (the other two in relay).
The Jura man is ahead of the skier Marielle Goitschelcrowned twice (in giant in Innsbruck 1964 and in slalom in Grenoble in 1968) and which also has a silver medal (slalom 1964).
Then follow three athletes with identical records composed of two gold medals and one bronze: the skier Henri Pillow (in 1948 in St. Moritz in downhill, combined and slalom) and skaters Henry Brunet et Andrée Jolydouble Olympic pairs champions in Saint-Moritz (1928) and Lake Placid (1932) after their bronze medal in Chamonix in 1924.
Finally, to close this list of double Olympic champions during the Winter Games, we must not forget to mention the snowboarder Pierre Vaultiercrowned in snowboard cross in Sochi (2014) and Pyeongchang (2018).
Who, during this 2026 edition, will come to mingle with these exceptional champions on the French side?
