Lausanne continues its flawless performance in the Conference League phase. After beating the Icelanders of Breidablik (3-0) at La Tuilière during the first day, Peter Zeidler’s players returned victorious from their trip to Malta by winning 1-0 against Hamrun Spartans.
A goal from young striker Gaoussou Diakité (20 years old) was enough for LS to be happy on the Mediterranean island. The talented Malian on loan from RB Salzburg broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, with a curling right-footed shot that surprised Maltese goalkeeper Henry Bonello.
The latter had delayed the deadline during a first half largely dominated by Peter Zeidler’s players. Theo Bair, from outside the right (26th), and Nathan Butler-Odeyeji, preferred to Beyatt Lekoueiry in support of the Lausanne attacking duo (31st), had both come up against the Spartan goalkeeper.
Some scares in the second half
In the warm atmosphere of the Ta’ Qali national stadium, the venue in which the Maltese selection plays, LS however suffered several scares. Karlo Letica had to pull out all the stops before Diakité opened the score to deflect a strike from Saliou Thoune, an attacker passed through Yverdon-Sport (2022-23).
In the second half, Hamrun was again dangerous via N’Dri Koffi (69th) and Letica was very happy to see the ball fleeing out of his frame. The people of Lausanne can therefore consider themselves more than happy to bring back the three points from their first trip in this phase of the league.
In a good position
With already 6 points on the clock, LS is in an excellent position to finish in the top 24 of the ranking, synonymous with qualification for the knockout phase. Last year, the 24th finished with 7 units and obtained its place for the dams.
A third consecutive victory on November 6 at La Tuilière against the Cypriots of Omonia Nicosia would therefore practically ensure LS a European spring.
